BORN in 1937, it wasn’t until he was in the mid-60s John Hume first came to prominence.

First as the youngest ever President of the the Irish League of Credit Unions in 1965 and later in the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Associatio­n. Hume went on to represent the SDLP in Foyle in Westminste­r after the 1983 election.

Along with Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998 and stepped back from frontline politics in 2004.
