MALACHY SALUTES HIS SIDE’S

MONAGHAN boss Malachy O’rourke last night charted his side’s rise from zeroes to heroes as they head to a first All-ireland semi since 1988.

It’s hard to fathom that the Farney Army were thrown into the depths of despair at the start of June when they lost in Ulster to Fermanagh. Two months on, they are riding the crest of a wave having topped Group 1 of the Super 8s by virtue of yesterday’s comprehens­ive Pearse Stadium win.

“After we lost to Fermanagh we would’ve given our right arm to be coming down here, to get a point or two points to get through to an All-ireland semi-final,” admitted O’rourke.

That was the attitude that they took to Galway despite the disappoint­ment of not booking their last four place two weekends ago against Kerry, having led by five points with 10 minutes remaining at Clones.
