France flood camp bosses investigated

- BY JOHANNA DECORSE

TWO men running a camp in France that was devastated by flash floods are under investigation for operating without a licence.

Torrential rains destroyed the site, with several children injured and one man, 66, missing. The two German operators also face charges of unintentionally causing injuries and putting lives in danger.

Rescuers evacuated more than 180 people from the site in Saint-julien-depeyrolas, north of Avignon, amid floods on Thursday.

Prosecutor Eric Maurel said: “We’re confident that the camp site was located in a flood zone. On the day of the incident, the town hall signalled the immediate danger and they still did not clear the site.”

Lawyers for the two men could not be reached.
