Lowry’s got it Al together

- BY NEIL MCLEMAN

SHANE LOWRY praised his new caddie – his brother – after shooting his lowest ever Major round, at the US PGA.

The Irish star split with his long-time bagman Dermot Byrne after the first round at The Open, and had his coach carry his clubs for 18 holes.

His brother Alan, who is taking a month’s holiday from his job at Deloitte in Dublin, has caddied in Lowry’s last two events, in which he recorded two top-15 finishes.

And after a steady opening 69 at Bellerive Country Club, the world No.88 shot a brilliant, bogey-free 64 in his raindelayed second round to sit tied fifth on the halfway leaderboard as he battles to keep his PGA Tour card.

“It’s great,” said Shane. “Obviously things haven’t been going well for me this year. But the last few weeks have been good.

“I have my brother on the bag, and he’s doing a great job, he really enjoyed it. And now we’re in the mix at the PGA.

“It’s great. I have my dad here to watch. It doesn’t get much better.

“Is my brother taking all the credit for this? I’m sure he will be.”

Lowry had eight holes to complete in his second round yesterday, starting at 7am local time.

“I set the alarm for 4.45am but I had to turn over,” Lowry said. “I set about four or five alarms. I think I got up about 5.05am and got to the course at 5.50am.”

Early first-round leader Rickie Fowler stayed in the hunt for his first Major with a second-round 67.

“I feel like I can play it very well,” said the world No.9. “I feel like I’m in a good spot with the game.

“The biggest thing is not getting ahead of yourself, sticking to the game plan, not trying to do anything extra special.”
