Ferguson bred the home-grown Class of 92 - Phil and Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt, and had a solid partnershi­p of Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister on and off the pitch, something Macari reckons Mourinho is badly missing.

Macari, who spent 11 years at United and is a regular pundit for the club’s MUTV channel, said: “Some players would seek his guidance but now they look elsewhere, usually to their agents.

“There’s no doubt Sir Alex could see the way that things were going with players.

“It’s obvious to me that he made the right move.”
