Alison with His Holiness lot in her short life.” Alison, the youngest of three children, has been in and out of hospital since she was six weeks old and Brigid says she couldn’t be prouder of her. She revealed: “I remember all the times I was there in the hospital with her. I was falling apart but she would be sitting up on the bed telling the other children, ‘Look, don’t worry about it, it’s only a little pinch’.

“Yet she might have spent an hour or two in agony getting treatment herself just before that.”

Alison met the Pope three years ago at a Mass in Rome where he accepted a gift from her.

Brigid revealed: “That time she was the first Traveller child he greeted when he came off the podium. We have a photo of it, but not a selfie. That time she was saying, ‘Oh, I’d love to get a selfie, I’d love to get a selfie’.

“But when he came down she was distracted.

“We’ve given both images to Frank Gavin Photography because he did her Communion and her Confirmation, so we’ll have them both framed now.”
