Asian Games win sees Son escape draft

- BY ALAN SELBY

TOTTENHAM striker Son Heung-min will avoid military service after South Korea won gold at the Asian Games yesterday.

The €25million international and the rest of the squad were rewarded with exemption for beating Japan 2-1 in the final.

South Korean men must do 21 months of service in the military, but athletes who win gold at the Asian Games, or an Olympic medal, can avoid it.

Son’s future had been uncertain due to the call-up rules and he had signed a new five-year contract with Spurs in July.

South Korea beat neighbours North Korea to take gold in 2014.

But Son was not in the squad because his thenclub Bayer Leverkusen refused to let him play.
