World Cup winner Karembeu believes United’s £89million playmaker needs to feel the love from Mourinho if he is to rediscover his best form for the Reds.

Pogba’s dad, Fassou Antoine, passed away last year following a long battle with illness.

And Karembeu believes that Mourinho must try to fill the emotional void if he is to get the best out of the 25-year-old after a summer in which the player’s agent has tried to force a move away from United.

He said: “I played my best when my manager encouraged me.

“We are all human beings and from childhood it is always better to have parents that guide you, who tell you why it is better to do some things and not others. “I think it is the same for a manager. “We have all been kids, coming from a certain background or environment and, of course, Paul today is missing a father.

“I think Jose could be the one who gives him this opportunity to shine for Manchester United.

“I think Jose is one of the best in the game – and we need to respect his job.

“He knows Pogba very well and Pogba knows him.

“Remember, it was Mourinho who made Pogba come back to Manchester
