United seething still over Godin

- BY SIMON MULLOCK

MANCHESTER UNITED are still furious with Diego Godin for using their interest in him to secure a new deal with Atletico Madrid.

United thought they had landed one of Jose Mourinho’s targets on August 8 when they triggered Godin’s £18million buy-out clause.

After assurances that Godin, 32, (right) wanted to come to Old Trafford, they arranged for a private jet to fly him to Manchester from his holiday in Sardinia to complete the move.

But they had to cancel the plane when the Uruguayan said Atletico had responded by offering him a two-year contract extension on better wages of £130,000 a week.

It meant United were unable to deliver the new centre-back that Mourinho had demanded.
