Family cheat death as mum and tot fall into path of train

Matthews strolls out of baby store Family were saved by pit underneath track

Police say the mother was pushing her child in a buggy when she accidentally slipped over the platform edge while looking at an indicator board.

The child’s father leapt down to help and the three sheltered in a pit beneath the track as a Matthews on shopping trip train passed over. They avoided being electrocuted by highvoltage lines “by pure luck”, said Transport for London.

London’s Baker Street station was evacuated and Jubilee Line trains delayed after the drama on Friday at about 10.15pm. TFL spokesman Nigel Holness said: “We are relieved the family were unharmed and we offer them our best wishes. We understand this was an accident.” Witness Peter Holland said bystanders were screaming and crying. He wrote on Twitter: “I can’t tell you how relieved I am to hear this wasn’t fatal. Thoughts out to the driver of the train. Unbelievable.”

The family’s survival was made possible by a drainage pit below the track, sometimes called an anti-suicide pit. Transport police are investigating.
