Brexit ‘to kill off next-day order drops’

- BY KEIR MUDIE

NEXT-DAY UK deliveries of goods could disappear after Brexit, say union chiefs.

They fear staff shortages in warehouses caused by Britain quitting the EU will leave customers waiting longer for ordered goods.

One third of the sector’s workforce is from other EU countries, the UK Office for National Statistics told the GMB after a request.

GMB general secretary Tim Roache said: “Without a plan to improve the quality of employment and a proper deal in place, how this trade will continue to function is anyone’s guess.

“As leaving day nears it is clearer many comforts we take for granted, such as next-day deliveries, could become a thing of a past.”

The GMB called for improved post-brexit pay and conditions in the sector.
