Kompany credit for Robertson

- BY HECTOR NUNNS

ANDREW ROBERTSON got a much-needed boost from Vincent Kompany ahead of Scotland’s Nations League opener against Albania.

The Liverpool left-back and new captain of his country endured a grim night for his first game with the armband as Belgium ran riot at Hampden Park on Friday.

Alex Mcleish’s side committed a series of errors as the World Cup semi-finalists cantered to a 4-0 victory to set alarm bells ringing ahead of Monday’s clash.

Robertson, who started out at Queen’s Park, insisted the blunders had to be cut out as Scotland attempt to qualify for their first major finals in 22 years at Euro 2020.

But Manchester City and Belgium legend Kompany is impressed with the rise of Robertson, who played in the Champions League Final earlier this year – and used to pick him playing Football Manager.

Kompany said: “Most of us in football have come from humble backgrounds and it’s great to see a player like him come through to play at such a high level and captain Scotland.

“I knew of him even when he was playing in Scotland before he joined Hull. I played the Football Manager game, that’s why.

“Good left-backs are hard to come by on that game, so I took a gamble on him!”
