LOVEJOY star Dudley Sutton has died of cancer aged 85.

He was best known for his role as Tinker Dill, the sidekick to Ian Mcshane’s rogueish antiques dealer in the hit BBC comedy drama.

His other TV credits included the Beiderbecke Trilogy, Smiley’s People and The Sweeney. He also appeared in Emmerdale and Eastenders .

Speaking last year about his time in Lovejoy, Dudley – who had a five-year marriage to US actress Marjorie Steele in the Sixties – said: “It’s what they’re going to say on my obituary when I die, regardless of all the diverse stuff I’ve done.

“People recognise Tinker. They don’t recognise Dudley Sutton.”
