We’re rooting for Mart of darkness
Ozark goes full Breaking Bad
Simon Cowell similarities to other dark dramas there is also plenty that sets Netflix series Ozark apart and makes it so damn good.
First there’s the deadpan Marty himself, played by Jason Bateman, who draws on his experience as a comedy actor to make the darker moments almost palatable. Then The Byrds fight for their family there’s three-time Oscar -nominated Laura Linney as his wife.
Once she throws in her lot she makes a better baddie than him.
Viewers fully realise that Marty’s main motivation was greed, but as he tries to fend off a Mafia mob and keep the FBI at bay they find themselves rooting for him.
Ozark is set in the murky swamps of Missouri and season two sees Marty tasked with laundering the Mexican drug cartel’s money and building them a casino.
He is forced to work much closer with the Snells – since they own the land on which the gam- bling house will be built and they’re not known for their generosity.
Wendy draws on her past experience as a political campaigner back in Chicago and takes charge – manipulating the powers that be to influence lawmakers. Meanwhile, Ruth Langmore – another great reason to watch Ozark – quickly realises that her daddy Cade’s release from jail is not the good news she hoped.
Add to this Charlotte Byrde’s teenage tantrums, her younger brother Jonah’s scheming and lodger Buddy’s failing health, and you have a gripping series.
Definitely the best thing to hit our screens since Breaking Bad.
All 10 episodes of Ozark series two are now available on Netflix.
