Emmy’s 2018 special
Four years ago, Benedict Cumberbatch
didn’t know he had won an Emmy until hours after Woody Harrelson read out his name at the LA ceremony. His celebration was a cup of tea and cake with wife Sophie after waking up to the news in London.
But on Monday, Emmy nominee Benedict, 42, has vowed to be at the centre of the ceremony – and the after-party dance floor. The Brit is a leading contender again for his role in Showtime’s pitch-black dramedy Patrick Melrose.
He says: “The bit I look forward to is dancing at the end of the night. I think a little square of a dance floor with some friends and not too many mobile phones.
"That’s always the moment I really enjoy.”
Reflecting on the last time he won, for his performance in Sherlock, he says: “I woke up in the morning and my phone blew up. I turned to my wife, Sophie, and I went, ‘I think I won an Emmy’ and she was so surprised at my reaction she got a cake made with, ‘I think I just won an Emmy’ on top of it.” A dozen Brits have been nominated at this year’s Emmys in Hollywood. Joining Benedict Cumberbatch are The Crown’s Claire Foy and Matt Smith, plus former Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery, for her role in Godless. Thandie Newton is up for Westworld while James
Corden’s Late Late Show also gets a nod. Matthew Rhys is nominated for The Americans, Joseph Fiennes for The Handmaid’s Tale and Game of Thrones’ Lena Headey is in the running too. Rising stars Vanessa Kirby and Matthew Goode also compete and Letitia Wright is up for Black Mirror.
