Cahill opens about tragic lake deaths

- BY SYLVIA POWNALL

SPORTS broadcaster Des Cahill opened his heart about a family tragedy during an emotional interview on the Late Late Show.

He told host Ryan Tubridy how his father’s first wife and two of their four children died in the 1950s in Co Clare.

Recounting details from his book Play It Again, Des, he said the children got in trouble in a lake and their mother went in to rescue them.

His father subsequently married Des’ mother and the family never spoke of the tragedy.

A tearful Cahill said: “His wife brought the four other children to the lake and one of them got into trouble, a girl... her brother and mother followed in, and they all drowned.”
