Stars pay tribute to music legend Chas after death at 74
Chas on guitar, left, with Dave COCKNEY music king Chas Hodges was toasted by generations of stars and fans yesterday after he died aged 74.
The ever-smiling pianist – one half of Chas & Dave – had beaten cancer but died from organ failure in the early hours. Guitarist Dave Peacock, his bandmate for half a century, led the tributes. Dave, 71, said: “I am going to miss him so much. He would be singing or humming a tune when he was eating and I can tell you he was even singing when he was having chemotherapy. That was him.
“He was a fabulous musician and a fabulous friend. He was a music junkie because he couldn’t stop hitting the notes. Tonight I feel like I am in the twilight zone. I will miss him.”
Tributes poured in from other showbiz and sporting figures.
Comedian Rob Beckett tweeted: “So sad. Such a legend. Together with Dave he wrote the soundtrack to my childhood. RIP Chas Hodges.”
Boxing hero Frank Bruno posted: “Worked with Chas & Dave loads of times and had a good laugh every time.
“I was always driving home from working with them singing Rabbit Rabbit or London Girls.”
