What’s it worth?

On Antiques & Collectables

Q I have a signed picture of the Coronation Street cast. It’s at least 30 years old and “Granada Television” is at the bottom. What is it worth? Joseph Elsom, via email

A Well, your Street could be paved with gold... to the tune of a few hundred euro, at least. Normally, TV memorabilia is worth less than similar material from the movies, which always strikes me as quite odd given their respective viewing figures. Of Corrie, the cast have always been generous especially when donating for charity auctions. And your picture is a superb collectable that should appeal to fans of Britain’s most popular soap.

Q I have a 14ins-high dalmatian made by Beswick pottery, in good condition and with a gloss finish. Is he worth much? Mike Turner, Oxford

A This was designed by Graham Tongue as part of the Fireside Models series between 1969 and 1989. Also known as model number 2271. There are a few superb pieces in the series, like the Yorkshire terrier and the alsatian. Ruffly speaking, all three would cost €100-€140 from a dealer.

Q I have a large picture frame bought at a charity auction in Japan several years ago. It shows Michael Schumacher driving his Marlboro Ferrari and a plaque listing his name, place of birth, date of birth and the dates of his seven world championships. On the right is a larger picture of him at the wheel and in the centre is a signed red driving glove. There is a certificate of authenticity on the back from the charity Hope International. Can you value it – initially for insurance purposes. Jay Harris, via email

A There is a buoyant and exciting market in Formula One collectables and prices are on the up. Many consider Schumacher, who was tragically injured in a skiing accident, as the sport’s greatest ever driver. This is a great item which I imagine would sell for €1,000-plus.
