Trump could wreck WTO Brexit plans
DONALD Trump is poised to ruin Britain’s chances of using the World Trade Organisation to oversee exports and imports if they quit the EU with no deal.
The US President is blocking the appointment of WTO judges.
The group, which used to have seven judges, is set to have three from today – the minimum needed.
But judges regularly drop out of decisions due to conflicts of interest, which will mean tariffs and quotas cannot be set.
British Labour Deputy Leader Tom Watson said: “Without a proper functioning complaints system, the global trade body is dead in the water.”
Mr Trump said of the WTO last month: “If they don’t shape up, I would withdraw from the WTO.”
