victory. Substitute Sturridge had only been on the field for three minutes when he swung his left boot majestically and sent his effort soaring past Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Eden Hazard had provided a delightful finish at the end of a superb move to give Chelsea the lead in the first half.

But just as Maurizio Sarri’s men looked to be heading for victory up popped Sturridge to deny them maximum points.

Sturridge said: “It was a good goal. The boys worked tirelessly throughout the game and we were unlucky not to score in the first half. I’d like to think I’ve scored better goals but probably not — this one was a nice goal.

“It was all about getting the result. It’s a team game and I just give my best.

“It’s important to keep pushing forward and have a positive outlook on how things are going.”
