CASEY IN TEARS AS HE POINTS THE WAY

- BY ANDY DUNN

PAUL CASEY broke down in tears after winning his first Ryder Cup point in 12 years.

On another emotionally-charged day, it was all too much for the 41-year-old Englishman (right), who combined with Tyrrell Hatton to see off the crack American pairing of Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler in the morning fourballs. He struggled to contain his emotions after the Europeans clinched a 3&2 victory, explaining: “I was emotional as soon as we walked off the 16th green.

“In all likelihood, this may be the last European-based Ryder Cup I’ll play. I’d love to be in Italy (Ryder Cup 2022) but I’m 41 right now so we’ll see. There was a tear. I was emotional. Hey, I’m not embarrassed. I care about it. It means an awful lot to me. I’m proud to be on this team and proud to be standing next to those other 11 team-mates and proud to win a point.” This was Casey’s first Ryder Cup appearance since 2008, when he collected just half a point from three matches. He went on: “I think it was 12 years since I last won a full point. I had my sights on trying to make this team because I knew it would be an amazing team.”

For Hatton, the rookie, it was his first Ryder Cup point. “I’m just buzzing we could get the win,” he said.
