Mcgolden boy David

- By TONY STENSON at The Den

WHO needs Billy Sharp when you’ve got David Mcgoldrick?

Mcgoldrick’s two goals helped United claw into fourth place in the Championship a point behind leaders West Brom as Millwall manager Neil Harris tore into his toothless Lions.

He fumed: “We were embarrassing. I don’t care about the two penalties against us, although I thought the ref might be wrong, but it was more us playing badly.

“Some of the players need to take a long hard look at themselves. The table does not lie. We are not doing the right things.”

United boss Chris Wilder said: “I’m delighted for David. He took responsibility for the second penalty. It is how I like my senior pros to act.

“It was a nail-biter when it shouldn’t have been. We were the better side, but then they hit us hard. I have every belief Millwall will stay up. We’ve got 19 points from 10 games but anything can happen and we must stay strong.”

United took the lead then had to fight back from 2-1 down before Mcgoldrick’s two goals settled it.

Sharp has been the second-best English striker over last three seasons with 67 goals after Tottenham’s Harry Kane (87).

Yesterday he almost fluffed his lines by having a 25th-minute penalty brilliantly saved by Millwall keeper Ben Amos (below) – but then headed United into a 40th minute lead from Mark Duffy’s cross.

His joy was short-lived as Millwall, who started the game third from bottom, scored twice in three minutes and unleashed a frenzied, thriller which kept fans on edge right to the end.

Goals from Jake Cooper and Jed Wallace led a Millwall charge but when Shaun Williams gave away the second of two penalties up stepped Mcgoldrick, who arrived in the summer without a club, to score in the 79th minute and then grab an 88th-minute winner.

Defeat means Millwall have not won a league game since beating Derby on August 18, having now lost six and drawing just three.
