Hundreds of anti-abortion crosses dumped by road

- BY STEPHEN MAGUIRE

HUNDREDS of crosses used as part of an abortion protest campaign have been found dumped in grass verges.

County councillor Paul Canning appealed to “the people that put them up to kindly have them removed from our ditches”.

An anti-abortion group placed more than 10,000 along a 20km stretch of road between Derry and Donegal last May in the lead up to the Abortion Referendum. The stunt took pro-life protesters hours to pull off under the cover of darkness.

The group, along with Donegal County Council, removed many of the crosses which drivers had reported to be a distraction.

But now hundreds have been found buried along the roadside and Mr Canning said there was no excuse for littering.

He added: “I appreciate concerns about our constitution but our environment matters too.”
