four on the bounce now.” The home side asked all the questions in the first half and should have been ahead on 15 minutes.

Mark Duffy’s clever pullback found David Mcgoldrick six yards out but the striker hooked the ball over the bar.

Struggling Hull rarely threatened Henderson in the Blades goal but the keeper, on loan from Manchester United, pulled off the save of the game on 68 minutes, diving full length to tip away Markus Henriksen’s free header.

That save was pivotal as United took the lead just two minutes later from the penalty spot after Tommy Elphick was guilty of grabbing Jack O’connell. Mcgoldrick made no mistake for his fifth goal of the season, sending David Marshall the wrong way.

The defeat means the Tigers drop to the foot of the table and manager Nigel Adkins admits it has been a tough week for the club. He said: “We’ve played the top three teams in the division in the past three games and we have to keep the belief going that the points will come.

“It’s not where you want to be in the division, but we can’t hide from that.

“The players are grafting and working hard, you have seen that in the three games.

“They are showing a great attitude but it’s fine margins. We have played some really good football but we need to pick up points.”
