spent most of the first episode trying to work out what exactly was going on, I was well and truly hooked by the end of it and more than prepared to brave the nine subsequent episodes. The story cleverly weaves between the two timelines and viewi’ve

The Haunting of Hill House ers are gradually drip-fed details about the terrible events that unfolded when the family first moved into the house, intending to flip it for a quick profit.

At the same time you get to grips with the lasting effects of the trauma on each of the characters – and how it has damaged their relationships with one another.

The season finale finally gives away the terrible secrets buried for 20 years – and the ending is nighon perfect (so no season 2 please Netflix). The gripping series is probably the best horror TV show ever watched as it devotes an entire episode to each character and fleshes them out in greater detail than any scream flick ever could. It stars Timothy Hutton, Carla Gugino and Victoria Pedretti. It starts with the children of the Cain family growing up in a haunted house and then fast forwards 20 years to show how they are coping with life now. The adult siblings’ fears become real leading one to take her life after a corpse rises from its coffin, and another to become possessed. This is not only a first-class horror, it’s also a moving and emotional drama about a dysfunctional and traumatised family struggling to cope with drug addiction, PTSD and a whole raft of mental health issues linked to their past.
