Klopp relieved to see Salah scoring again as Reds stay in title h

David Wagner (below) found there would be no present of any kind from his former Borussia Dortmund sparring partner Klopp.

Huddersfield’s chief was celebrating his 47th birthday and had said beforehand that he was at an age where he doesn’t swap presents with his best mate in football.

How Wagner must have wished that his team – still without a goal in front of their own fans – could have been gifted something after struggling to find any successful route towards Alisson’s goal. But there was no doubt who was the happier boss. For all sorts of reasons. It was a welcome return to the line-up for Lallana. He had not been named in the starting XI for a Premier League fixture since the victory over Burnley on New Year’s Day. In fact, this current campaign has been little better so far. He had just a handful of minutes under his belt when he picked up the groin injury on England duty that has kept him on the sidelines for the past seven weeks. Klopp had other injury issues going into this. Sadio Mane returned to Merseyside having undergone surgery to his thumb. Roberto Firmino was left on the bench.

Daniel Sturridge was rewarded for his improvement in form – and possibly the late leveller at Stamford Bridge – by being asked to spearhead the Reds’ attack.

With Xherdan Shaqiri also named, Klopp’s choice certainly had the look of goals about it.

Particularly during the early stages, however, there was a lack of understanding in the final third of the pitch. This was, after all, a newly assembled attack.

But all that changed in the 24th minute. Joe Gomez, moved to right- back, split two midfielders with a pass to Shaqiri that allowed the Swiss international to move towards the Terriers’ rearguard.

Salah, like a man waiting for the baton in a sprint relay, moved into top gear and his team-mate’s pass, down the side of centre-half Christopher Schindler was weighted perfectly.

The Egypt international took his shot first-time with his right-foot, sending it into the net across keeper Jonas Lossl off the inside of the post.

If Liverpool thought this was to be the prelude to a comfortable evening in west Yorkshire, they had another think coming.
