Ice scientist ‘stabbed pal who spoiled books plots’

- BY WILL STEWART

Sergey Savitsky A SCIENTIST at a lonely Antarctic research station tried to murder a colleague for giving away the plots of books, it has been claimed.

Engineer Sergey Savitsky is alleged to have plunged a kitchen knife into Oleg Beloguzov in a boozy row in their base canteen.

Reports said the reason Savitsky, 55, gave was that he was fed up with Beloguzov constantly telling him the endings of stories before he had time to read them himself.

They had spent four years at Bellingshausen station on King George Island, 120 miles off the frozen continent’s coast.

Savitsky is currently under arrest in Russia and Beloguzov, 52, is being treated in hospital in Chile.

He suffered a chest injury which is not thought to be life-threatening.

According to reports, the incident was fuelled by alcohol.

Senior official Alexander Klepikov said: “Both are members of our team.

“It is down to investigators to figure out what sparked the conflict.”

The base, named after a famed explorer, was set up by the Soviets in 1968.
