Little Drummer Girl hard to beat

Twists & turns as actress turned spy tries to halt bomb missions

Podge and Rodge are just not funny any more – their jokes are outdated. Monday’s eagerly-awaited return of the O’leprosy brothers was a huge letdown. Explaining to Made in Chelsea’s JT what a “mickey” was could have gotten a laugh if they hadn’t flogged it to death, and mentioning the samesex marriage and abortion referendums suggests they’ve fallen foul of the PC brigade. The only highlights were the Trump and Kim Jong-un outfits – and warning Doireann Garrihy she was a #Metoo waiting to happen… Ditch the PC lads, it has no place in comedy. Jewish targets in Europe. The first episode is largely set in Naxos and Athens where Charlie, full name Charmian Ross, meets Joseph Becker (Alexander Skarsgard) who starts as a holiday romance and later becomes her case officer. Joseph & Charlie Charlie is an enigmatic character who remains a mystery even to some of her closest friends and it’s only in later episodes viewers start to get a glimpse of who she really is. There is also far more to Joseph, who is interchangeably known as Jose but in fact slips between a total of five names in the first two episodes, than meets the eye.

Scenes were shot on location in England, Prague and Athens but the action also jumps between Palestine, Turkey, Tel Aviv, Austria and Yugoslavia. Most of the Podge and Rodge with Doireann Garrihy filming took place in Athens where the cast and crew were granted permission by the Greek government to film at the Acropolis at night. Executive producer Simon Cornwell said: “We were very lucky. The Greek government was incredibly supportive. Shooting on the Acropolis was a very big deal. “Flying a drone over the Acropolis was a first in the 2,500 years since it was built. It was one of the most memorable nights of my life.” Later in the series, the team filmed at the Temple of Poseidon on Greece’s Attica Peninsula, an ancient Greek temple built during the period 444BC to 440BC. The Little Drummer Girl airs on BBC One, tonight, at 9pm.
