‘Sympathy grabber’ killer

- EXCLUSIVE BY PATRICK HILL

A CRIMINOLOGIST says Cannan’s note to a woman penpal reveals his need to be in control and feel important. Christopher Berry-dee, 71, wrote a book about Cannan after receiving nearly 100 letters from the killer. Berry-dee, who has quizzed 30 Christopher Berry-dee serial killers and is now director of the Criminology Research Centre, told the Sunday Mirror: “This letter is pure manipulation by Cannan.

“It’s a sympathy grabber towards the woman’s maternal instinct, with him claiming he’s helpless in jail.

“And him promising to buy her a villa is classic Cannan b ****** t. It couldn’t be a drink or a dress could it? With Cannan it has to be a villa. He’s also suggesting ‘I have so much to tell you, so many secrets’, but it’s just an attempt to control. It’s what he does.

“And despite what he said in the letter he’ll be loving all this new publicity and be parading around his wing like a king.

“It makes him feel a ‘someone’ again.”
