Police battle protesters in Athens demo
Clashes in streets POLICE clashed with young protesters throwing petrol bombs in Athens yesterday after a march to commemorate the student uprising that helped topple the military junta in 1973.
Trouble erupted after a peaceful march by over 10,000 demonstrators.
Clashes broke out at Athens Polytechnic, where dozens died in 1973.
Greek TV showed images of police firing tear gas at protesters locked inside the building.
Others built street barricades or threw petrol bombs and stones from rooftops. Police used a water cannon to disperse the crowd.
Earlier, many people laid wreaths and carnations at the polytechnic to honour those who were killed in the 1973 revolt. David Arquette
