O’NEILL: I DON’T FEAR THE DANES

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

MARTIN O’NEILL admits he is facing the biggest challenge of his five years with Ireland.

But while a miserable 2018 could get even worse away to Christian Eriksen’s Denmark tomorrow night, O’neill is not living in fear.

Ireland’s World Cup playoff conquerors have their tails up and could inflict another comprehensive beating.

Confidence is at rock bottom but O’neill said: “No, I’m not fearful of it at all. It’s a tough game for us but I’m not fearful.

“You’re in this game not to be fearful of things but to take on the challenge.”

Denmark clinched top spot in this Nations League group with their 2-1 win in Wales on Friday.

That victory also secured the Danes a Euro 2020 playoff in the convoluted Nations League format.

With little at stake, O’neill will hope the Danes down tools and that Ireland can win for just the second time in 11 games.

O’neill said: “Naturally. It’s a challenge as you have to try win some football matches.

“You’re in the business to try win games. These are international matches and they are not easy but we should do better.

“We don’t have momentum but we have to try to get it.”
