Williams: Forget age - I can do

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

SHAUN WILLIAMS insists age is no barrier as he looks to play the Peter Pan role in the Ireland squad.

But manager Martin O’neill has warned the Millwall midfielder that caps won’t be served on tap.

At 32, Williams is the third oldest player – behind Colin Doyle and Richard Keogh – in the squad that arrived in Denmark last night.

But only six players available for this Nations League clash have fewer caps than the former League of Ireland star.

Capped just three times, game time has proved hard to come by since making his debut away to France in the summer.

Williams must have thought the tide would turn after impressing in Poland two months ago – but he has been frozen out in the last three games.

Still, at least he is inside the tent.

And that is why the Malahide man has no intention of letting the opportunity slip through his grasp with Euro 2020 qualifiers looming in March.

The ultimate goal is to have a role in an Irish squad playing games in Dublin during the finals.

Williams would be 33 by then, but claims it does not concern him as his game will still be the same as he cannot lose what he never had.

“I think I read the game quite well,” he said ahead of tomorrow’s clash in Aarhus. “Don’t have the legs, never had the legs.

“I’m left-footed but if needs be I’ll go with the right. Passing is definitely my strength, and reading the game.

“I might be one of the players who doesn’t get headlines, but I’m a team player.

“If someone needs covering, I’m there. I think that’s why I’ve played so many games at Millwall. The manager (Neil Harris) trusts me.”
