Kieffer puts battling Barnsley in frame

-

Zeki Fryers sent off for a second booking. There were worries the game would be delayed because a straying cow closed the motorway leading to the stadium.

But when play kicked off on time, bullish Barnsley were quickly into their stride to leave boss Daniel Stendel incredibly demanding more.

Stendel said: “I think in the first half I was not really satisfied. We wanted to play better. But we showed we can play against this kind of atmosphere.

“It was important that we won this game and showed this attitude.”

Accrington boss John Coleman said: “The second goal flattered them because it was never going to be a 2-0. We know we can compete with the team I believe are the best team in the league.”

There wasn’t a spare seat, or another inch of standing room, with 2,352 travelling faithful boosting the attendance to a record 4,801.

And those freezing fans got full value for money with a full-blooded first half whetting the appetite. It was all action from the fifth minute when Jordan Clark’s shot was heading for the top corner before Barnsley keeper Jordan Smith, on a week’s emergency loan from Nottingham Forest, saved brilliantly. And Smith, who had played just once since January, pulled off another smart stop 60 seconds later to deny skipper Sean Mcconville. But Barnsley threatened for the first time in the 21st minute when Dimitri Cavare saw his effort blocked by keeper Connor Ripley.

Woodrow (inset) struck the first Barnsley blow with a poke into the bottom corner, courtesy of Moore’s back heel. Accrington almost levelled in the 58th minute when Mcconville delivered a clipped cross which Smith somehow managed to flip away.

They fought until the end when in added time, Moore nudged in the decisive second in front of his delirious supporters.
