Row over ‘sexist’ footie undies

Spurs’ lingerie is slammed as an own goal

Campaigners claim the lingerie sends a message that “football is only for lads”.

Tottenham’s website lists eight items including lace thongs and a €12 club garter. It says: “Maybe you want to spice up a special occasion with this Spurs garter.”

Meanwhile, West Ham also sell a club garter for €7.

But Sport England says there are no equivalent items for male fans – nor sports underwear for women football players. Kate Dale, head of Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign, said: “It’s easy to dismiss this as a bit of fun but it’s the accumulation of lots of cues that tell women and girls that they don’t belong on the pitch or in the stands.

“So sell your lacy garter if you must, but can’t you also feature kick-ass women and girls of all ages in kit and clothing that they can play the game in?

“If we want women and girls to feel welcome in football, we need to see girls’ kit and sports appropriate clothes for women.”

Spurs said: “Take a look at the inclusion of our women players …across all our retail offerings.”

And West Ham said: “We’d rather not comment on this.”
