IRA boss Git came to a gruesome end in Love/ Hate after Tommy beat him senseless for sexually assaulting Siobhan, and Darren finished him off with a beer keg. Now the actor who played him, Jimmy Smallhorne, is back as the slimy Gar in Taken Down. Watching the brothel co-owner’s anticipation as he was about to rape teenage asylum seeker Flora was every bit as terrifying as it was unsettling. Evil b ***** d. becomes clear Alec died holding his secrets close to his chest.

The Affair star Ruth, who won critical acclaim for her role in Luther, leads an all-star cast and is executive producing the series about Star Ruth Wilson in Mrs Wilson her own grandparents. She carried the tale of espionage, betrayal and polygamy around with her for years wondering if she should, or even could, tell it on the screen. The 36-year-old said: “I would tell people the story, and they all said, ‘You’ve got to get this made’. “I didn’t necessarily want to, but it was an amazing story and the more I told it the more it became fascinating.” Her grandmother Alison Wilson had written in great detail about her experiences during the Second World War. Ruth added: “We had this memoir, which was the emotional truth of the story from a female perspective. “It made sense if you focused on her, you could still tell his story but through her eyes. It’s a very moving story.” Co-producer Ruth Kenleyletts watched Ruth morph into her own grandmother. She said: “It’s complex as she knew the woman she was playing from her perspective as a child and a granddaughter.” The cast also includes Game of Thrones star Iain Glen as Alec and Bodyguard’s Keeley Hawes. Mrs Wilson starts on BBC One on Tuesday at 9pm. news@irishmirror.ie
