Mick first.. then job is Kenny’s

STEPHEN KENNY is leaving Dundalk for the Ireland under-21 hot-seat with a view to succeeding new senior boss Mick Mccarthy after the Euro 2020 finals.

Kenny, 47, informed Oriel Park staff of his bombshell decision yesterday afternoon, having met with FAI officials at Abbotstown.

In doing so, the Dubliner brought to an end a golden six-year era in charge of the Premier Division club that, in the domestic game, includes four titles and two league and Cup doubles – the latest secured earlier this month.

Kenny (above) also led the Lilywhites to the Europa League stages in 2016.

Kenny had initially turned down the chance to replace Noel King in the under-21 set-up. But after Mccarthy swiftly agreed a return to the senior hot-seat Kenny had a re-think following further talks with FAI chiefs.

And it is now understood that Kenny will succeed Mccarthy down the line.

Mccarthy is viewed by the FAI as the ‘safe pair of hands’ required now in terms of qualifying for the
