What’s it worth?

On Antiques & Collectables

- JAMIE BREESE

Q I have been told that my copy of James Bond story You Only Live Twice is a first edition. It’s hardback and in very good condition – as is the protective dust jacket. Can you tell me more? Michael Wood, Swindon

A I’m a bit shaken and stirred here as you could, and I stress could, have a valuable item on your hand. Ian Fleming’s novel You Only Live Twice was released 54 years ago and it should say First Published 1964 on the inside. First edition copies make anywhere from €250 to €2,500-plus for a top example. It’s a specialised field so specialist inspection is usually required to ascertain just how many Money-pennies it is worth. The most prized first edition Bond novel of all is Casino Royale, which has seen copies sell for in excess of €30,000.

Q I collected several Lurpak promotional wares over the years after spotting their fab telly adverts. I have a butter dish, some egg cups and toast rack. What might they be worth? Lucy Ryan, Roath, South Wales

A There’s no point trying to butter you up – I don’t think you’ll be racking up a fortune here. The character who appeared in the ads and on your items too is Douglas, from the Wallace and Grommit creators. The toast holder is worth €30 or so, the dishes €20 and egg cups €10, if all boxed.

Q I own a Bush DAC 90 radio which is in a brown plastic casing, in superb condition and it still works! It is square with a circular speaker and quite heavy. Radio Can you tell me what it is worth? Albert Masterson, Rugby

A This box-shaped radio first appeared at the Britain Can Make It exhibition in 1946 and is considered part of the golden era of radio design. It originally cost £11 and 11 shillings (€13) and came in walnut brown, cream or black. The colours affect the value and, respectively, they tend to sell for €60 to €80, €80 to €120 and €100 to €150.
