Cheetahs 17 Connacht 21

DAVID HORWITZ kicked two key penalties as Connacht held on for their second South African victory in the space of six days

Tom Farrell and Gavin Thornbury bagged the firsthalf tries for Andy Friend’s side, who moved back into the top three of Conference A after the win in Bloemfontein.

In the baking South African heat, Connacht held off the home side who came with a late charge following Shaun Venter’s try seven minutes from time.

Farrell (inset) got Connacht off to a flyer with a try after six minutes, while Jack Carty converted and added a penalty soon after. Cheetahs proved wasteful in attack, but Connacht were the opposite and Thornbury mauled over their second try after 28 minutes. Malcolm Jaer ran clear just after the half hour mark for Cheetahs’ first try and four minutes later Joseph Dweba mauled over for their second try, but they trailed 15-10 at the interval.

Connacht were bright after the break and after replacing Carty, Horwitz (right) slotted penalties in the 57th and 65th minutes.

Venter then gave the tourists a shock with his late effort, but Jarrad Butler’s late steal got Connacht over the line.
