How I coped with... irritable bowel syndrome
I suffered with digestive issues like bloating, cramps, diarrhoea and abdominal pain from my teens.
Aside from regularly feeling unwell, it could be embarrassing, stressful and travel was a struggle.
I tried medications, herbs, exercise, cutting out caffeine, to no avail. Finally, in my 30s, I tried a LOW-FODMAP diet after reading positive things.
This involves reducing certain carbohydrates that are not properly absorbed by the small intestine. Foods that can cause trouble include dairy, onions and garlic, broccoli, wheat, stone fruits and apples. Within a week the bloating and nausea had gone and I had more energy. Following the plan was initially a challenge but it is now habit and I do it automatically.
I’m now 44, love to experiment with recipes and have created my own LOW-FODMAP recipe book.
