Matt Murphy and Michael O’sullivan Michael and Matt’s wedding day me out to meet all his friends, getting me out of the house.”

Dad-of-three Michael moved in with Matt in Stoneybatter, North Dublin, after the rented house he was living in was sold and he became his carer.

Matt’s eyesight was failing and he couldn’t get about on his own. While he couldn’t pay Michael wages he said he would leave him his house when he died.

The pair opted to marry so Michael would not be saddled with a crippling tax bill and could keep the roof over his head.

He revealed: “The fear I had was people would think we were doing it for just money but there’s more to it than that.

“He’s been so generous all over his lifetime. He looked after his grandparents until they died. He looked after his mother and bought her a house. “He’s been very generous to lots of different people. Now for the first time there’s somebody taking care of him and he deserves for that to happen.”

The couple tell their story on Liveline Callback on RTE One on Thursday at 7pm.
