Joey: I’ve made the right call

Munster v Castres Today, 1pm, BT Sport 2

JOEY CARBERY believes his move to Munster has been totally vindicated - and today’s meeting with Castres is further proof of that.

Two years ago Carbery found himself centre of attention against the French outfit as Leinster’s late replacement for Johnny Sexton.

All eyes will be on him again today but this time he’s Munster’s main man.

“I didn’t want to be sitting on the bench anymore in those big games,” said the 23-year-old of his big summer move.

“The big games are the ones you want to be playing in. Having started the first two Heineken Cup games I’m very happy with how it’s gone so far and it shows the strength of the group. We’re really looking forward to the next two weeks.

“I always knew that I’d made the right decision and now it’s been proven because it was purely based on gametime at 10. I’ve got it and I feel like my game has improved because of it.”

Carbery could feel the spotlight on him as he weighed up his future.

At one point there was a photo published of him, his father and Joe Schmidt meeting in a coffee shop.

“There’s obviously a lot of attention on you,” said the Athy man. “If you go up to the shops, you’ve people asking you things.

“I figured out that it would stay like that until I’d made my decision – and I didn’t make it until the day before I got on the plane to Australia with Ireland.

“Up until then I didn’t really know myself what I was doing. It was sitting with me for quite a while. I wanted to have all my options on the table but I had to make the best decision for me.”
