Carol, above, and with rival Hayley, right great drama – think Top of the Lake or Underbelly – so it’s about time Netflix tapped into its talent.

One of Underbelly’s most charismatic villains, Peter O’brien, reappears in another baddie/goodie role as Bill Sentelle. There’s another layer to the drama courtesy of the community of half-human, half-siren Tidelanders led by the young revolutionary Violca.

Madeleine Madden, who plays the seductress, said she watched Thandie Newton’s scenes from Westworld to prepare for her sexually charged role.

She revealed: “I drew a lot of inspiration from Thandie Newton’s Maeve Millay.

“I would watch snippets of her in my trailer before going on set to try and get as much of that kind of sexual and scheming character.”

Tidelands is unsettling, shock- ing and sexy – and all episodes are available to stream now.

If fly-on-the-wall documentaries are your thing then Chanel will be one of the subjects of new Netflix series Seven Days Out.

The programme highlights the work of visionaries in the worlds of fashion, film, food, space, sports and entertainment.

First up is the fashion house as cameras follow creative director Karl Lagerfeld as he prepares for the spring/summer 2018 couture show, available to watch on Netflix from 21 December.

Other new original series of note include cop drama Dowgs of Berlin, Mexican prison drama El Recluso, and spy thriller Pine Gap.

And not forgetting the Christmas special of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: A Midwinter’s Tale.
