Vampire’s Wife is celebs’ favourite label this year
IS this the dress of 2018? Celebrity favourite The Vampire’s Wife became a global hit this year due to its demure silhouettes teamed with vintage charm.
The British indie fashion label is the brainchild of former model Susie Cave, who is also the wife of rock star Nick Cave.
Taking its name from Nick’s abandoned book project, The Vampire’s Wife, the brand is inspired by 52-year-old Susie’s background in fashion and involvement with brands such as Galway milliner Philip Treacy, Vivienne Westwood and Bella Freud.
Launched in 2014, it has developed an A-list following, with fans including Irish actress Ruth Negga, Alexa Chung, Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley.
Hollywood stars such as Dakota Johnson, Maggie Gyllenhal, Cate Blanchett, and more recently Chloe Moretz and Jennifer Aniston have also been rocking the retro designs – the Falconetti, the Festival, the Belle and the Cinderella – on the red carpet. At the royal wedding of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry earlier this year, three guests including actress Charlotte Riley, appeared in the elegant silhouettes. Florence Welch told Vogue: “I don’t know what it is but they make you look like you’re practising witchcraft in a very romantic cult, which is how I want to look all the time. As a musician, I worship at the altar of Nick Cave, so I’ve always been fascinated by Susie as his enigmatic muse and inspiration. “It’s been so beautiful to see the muse become the maker.” Meanwhile, Kate Moss, who has been a fan of the label since its inception, said: “I have always been a little in awe of Susie. I love how she oozes sex in an unassuming way – a lot like her clothes.” Last year, former Eighties It-girl Susie, 52, revealed designing the dresses helped her cope with the tragic death of her 15-year-old son Arthur. “There’s definitely a joy in creating,” she told Vogue. “I’ve always wanted to make beautiful things but at the same time it’s about not wanting to be a victim of what happened.”
