KNOLL HOUSE HOTEL STUDLAND, DORSET

- ANN GRIPPER

WHERE & WHY Knoll House Hotel is perfectly placed for you to visit the long, sandy beaches and inner heath of Dorset’s Isle of Purbeck. There are glorious, unspoiled views across Studland Bay to the Isle of Wight, with Old Harry Rocks to the west and Bournemouth to the east, from the restaurant, terrace, and many of the bedrooms. With friendly staff and plenty of on-site activities – heated outdoor pool, spa, hot-tub, pitch and putt, tennis courts, croquet and other outdoor games, games room and extensive playground – Knoll House will appeal to families looking for a coastal retreat to suit several generations, or couples looking for a relaxing getaway. Dogs are welcome, too – just let the hotel know in advance.

ON THE MENU Start the day with an excellent breakfast spread in the spacious restaurant. The bistro offers food throughout the day. Treat yourself to an afternoon tea with a glass of fizz or just stick to scones and a cuppa sitting out on the terrace to make the most of the view and the afternoon sun. Try Dorset’s Conker gin on the terrace before dinner. The menu changes every night, with five options for each of the three courses. A starter of pan-fried mackerel with pickled beetroot and creme fraiche, and main of sauteed haddock with summer veg and a lime and basil glaze, gave a taste of the sea, while the confit lamb shoulder main was delicious. The chocolate brownie was excellent and banoffee pie indulgently naughty. Three courses cost £35.50.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE Hit the beach, with three in easy walking distance. Discover the Second World War history of Studland Bay, and walk the start of the south west coastal path from South Haven Point. Visit Swanage for a traditional seaside town and Durlston Country Park for views. Further afield, Corfe Castle is a great ruin.
