Or, as it turned out, – as the embryo that was put into Hayley’s womb split, creating identical twins.
There would be heartache and anxiety along the way, but when Hayley gave birth to sons Dylan and Stanley 17 months ago, their family was complete.
Hayley, 31, said: “People are amazed to hear that it was Kirsty’s eggs and that I was the one who carried the boys. It was a perfect solution for us.
“She wanted to have children but didn’t want to be pregnant herself and I didn’t mind if the child I carried wasn’t genetically mine. I have trained as a midwife and I’ve always wanted to be pregnant. So that’s how we decided on how we were going to create our family.”
The couple, who live in Kent, met five years ago at a local hospital when Hayley was an A&E nurse and Kirsty was a paramedic. Hayley added: “We really hit if off when we met, but we didn’t become a couple for six months.
“As soon as I met Kirsty, I knew that she was going to be in my life somehow.
“We married in September 2015, then started to look at starting our family.”
The couple had fertility treatment at a private clinic in Southampton. Kirsty had to inject herself daily with drugs to stimulate her ovaries to produce eggs, which were fertilised with donor sperm.
One embryo was put back into Hayley’s womb, but two weeks later, the couple found the treatment had failed.
Hayley said: “It was devastating when it hadn’t worked the first time. But we were determined to carry on and not give up hope.” They had a second attempt at fertility treatment in February 2017 – and this time it worked.
But they were in for a double surprise when they went for her first scan.
Hayley went on: “We were thrilled when we found out we were expecting twins. We couldn’t believe it when the sonographer showed us two little heartbeats pumping away. It was amazing.”
