THE family of an Icelandic tourist who vanished in Ireland two weeks ago launched a major search operation yesterday.

Around 50 volunteers took to the streets of North Dublin to help search for 41-year-old Jon Jonsson.

And they may have turned up a clue that could help find him.

Jon’s brother Daniel told RSVP Live: “We have found a cigarette butt that we believe is from him, but we can’t be sure.”

The item and pack were discovered on Grace Park Road in Drumcondra.

Jon was last seen on February 9 at around 11am in the Whitehall area of the city and is described as being 6ft and of medium build with short brown hair.

He had travelled to the capital with his partner to take part in a poker tournament.

Jon left the Bonnington Hotel at Family of missing Jon Jonsson 11.05am and was caught on CCTV at Mcgettigan’s bar two minutes later, exiting onto the Swords Road and heading north past Highfield Hospital.

Locals joined his worried family as they searched neighbouring areas yesterday. One of the volunteers told the Sunday Mirror they are “hopeful” home CCTV systems may help trace him.

Jon’s family members and friends have flown in to search.

His brothers David and Daniel appeared on The Late Late Show on Friday to appeal for information, telling host Ryan Tubridy Jon left his hotel room without his wallet, passport or phone.

David said the dedicated family man’s disappearance is “completely out of character”.

Search and rescue specialists from Iceland have been helping with the search efforts.
