I will be alright

What cancer survivor senator David told doctor who gave him bad news

- BY EMMA MCMENAMY

David Norris was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2013 most violent, agonising pain. It started at about 1.30am and I thought it was too late to ring the doctor.

“It kept coming and going all night until at 6.30am I couldn’t bear it any more. I rang the doctor who told me to get into him straight away.

“The doctor told me, ‘I’m sorry but I have bad news’ and his lip was trembling and he said, ‘You have an aggressive, incurable disease’.

“I wasn’t fearful or worried, not in the slightest.

“I put my arms around him and said, ‘There, there, don’t worry I will be OK.’ I had to comfort him.” And David said a recent check-up has proved he is still fit and healthy. He added: “I was in there yesterday actually and they gave me all these tests and they were all 100%.

“The bloods, blood pressure, everything, were all perfect.”

David revealed he is keeping busy with the upcoming poll, telling us: “I’m up to my knickers in the election.

“I could sleep for a week because the one big impact the operation had on me was I have had no physical energy since.

“I have loads of mental energy but no

With Meghan Markle physical energy at all. I have to make myself go for a walk.”

David is set to open a pop-up shop in Dublin’s Temple Bar to raise awareness of cancer and funds for new groundbreaking research.

High profile cancer survivors including dance superstar Michael Flatley, milliner to the stars Sarah Mcgahon, director Stephen Bradley and award-winning children’s book author and illustrator, Peter Donnelly, have all donated products or lent their talents to the store.

David said: “I will be opening this place called The Shop That Nearly Wasn’t on Tuesday.

“It’s open for a week and everything in it has been made by cancer survivors. It’s very remarkable.”
