Lorraine’s so Keane to praise hero Irish lockdown mothers

- BY MIKIE O’LOUGHLIN

BROADCASTER Lorraine Keane has told how mothers are the forgotten heroes during the coronavirus lockdown here in Ireland.

She said working mums have been amazing – as well as balancing their regular jobs, whether working from home or as full-time parents, they now have to deal with the added stresses of homeschooling, shopping and keeping the family in tow.

The businesswoman added they should be thanked, celebrated and appreciated for what they are going through.

Lorraine told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “I think mothers, a lot of us who are holding down day jobs as well, have been incredible throughout this.

“They have been homeschooling, cooking, keeping the house, queuing in supermarkets and just managing everything as well as doing a career from home.

“I think the mums who work from home or as full-time mums have taken on a hell of a lot during this time.

“I think they are the forgotten ones because it is phenomenal what they have had to do. They have done it all while still possibly looking in on neighbours and looking after elderly parents and doing their shopping.

“Irish women, in particular, have been heroes themselves and they should be thanked, celebrated and appreciated.” Lorraine also applauded the Government for looking after teenagers during a very scary time for them. She said: “I think after the frontline workers, those with underlying health problems and those cocooning, major thought and consideration went to young people. “I think they have done an incredible job, and that is a lot to do with the parents too.” Lorraine is mum to Emilia, 16, and 13-year-old Romy, and she explained they have been finding things difficult at home as they are missing out on important moments. She added: “Emilia and Romy are teenagers so the most important thing in the world to them is their friends. “My heart goes out to the Leaving Cert and Junior Cert students, but particularly those who are graduating and celebrating and doing those things we all had memories of.” As well as fronting her latest project, the finished.ie virtual homeshow on June 27, Lorraine and Oxfam Ireland will bring the Fashion Relief charity event online with Axonista. Those wishing to help developing countries can log on throughout the week to browse and buy. Every Friday at 7pm a new show with new content will be aired.
