THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS, THAMES VALLEY

- The story Relive it

This series of episodes starts with Mole getting fed up with his spring cleaning and emerging from the ground into a waterside world, where he meets Ratty and goes messing about in boats.

The book is full of further encounters, which include seeking out wise Badger in his home, deep in the Wild Wood and, of course, visiting car-mad Toad in his grand riverside mansion.

Narcissistic Toad loves disturbing the peace and getting into scrapes, which often involve fast cars and prison escapes.

Author Kenneth Grahame grew up in Cookham Dean, on the banks of the Thames, near Marlow in Berkshire.

The riverside path here is still largely unspoiled and there are several Toad Hall equivalents along the banks – particularly Cliveden House, which played a role in the Profumo affair and is now a grand hotel.

During the 13-mile hike upriver to Henley, you’ll see many a Toadlike character at the helm of their cruisers. Salters Steamers run trips from Henley to Marlow. salterssteamers.co.uk

rooms are decorated in pleasant, neutral tones with gorgeous views of the outdoor space and the rolling hills surrounding the hotel.

The room felt airy and spacious and had a coffee maker to help start the day off right.

The Emlyn Restaurant is plush with lilac banquettes and soft lighting, far brighter than many moody hotel restaurants.

The new menu is full of family favourites but given a fine dining feel. The fantastic staff
