This can never happen again, Taoiseach tells Late Late Show

- BY SYLVIA POWNALL

TAOISEACH Micheal Martin has vowed that the Government will take the lead on ending violence towards women.

The Fianna Fail leader said the murder of Ashling Murphy had provoked a “powerful act of solidarity” by the Irish people to support her grieving family.

Speaking on Friday’s Late Late Show, he said there must now be an effort to tackle a culture of misogynistic violence and boot it out of Irish society.

He said: “It is a devastation we all feel in our own homes. That someone so young, so beautiful, so talented with so much to give to our society has been taken away.

“She was a talented musician, a talented camogie player, obviously a talented teacher.

“See the smiles on the faces of the kids when she walked into that classroom, the affirmation she would bring to the classroom and all that’s been taken away.

“And I think people are are reflecting on all of that and saying enough is enough and this cannot happen again”.

The Taoiseach said work was underway on a “major strategy” to deal. He said Justice Minister Helen Mcentee and Children’s Minister Roderic O’gorman were overseeing this and substantive work had been done.

Mr Martin added: “I think men want to be part of the solution. I think men need to listen more to what women are saying to us.”

Meanwhile, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar echoed the Taoiseach’s words yesterday at a Fine Gael meeting.

He said: “We gather at a difficult time for the country and especially the family and friends of Ashling Murphy.

“The shocking events in Tullamore have touched us all. Yesterday we saw people, across the country, stand in solidarity with the Murphy family.

“I know more will do so today in our cities and constituencies.

“Minister Mcentee has made clear that the Garda have our total support and every resource that is needed will be provided as they investigate this murder.”
